Shapers

McTavish

An absolute Three Stories fave... Bob and Ben McTavish have a century of surfboard design pedigree between them. Their years of experimentation have produced a range from 4 to 14ft that you’ll be sure to have fun on... in anything from summer soup to standup cylinders. Guaranteed.

DIAMOND SEA
RINCON

BEATNIK
NOOSA 66
SQUARETAIL

NOSERIDER
GLIDERS

Georgia's 2 Cents... Well, talk about an icon of Australian surf history! The longboards and mid-lengths produced in the McTavish factory are steeped in tradition, ride-ability and progressive surfing to suit a multitude of conditions. I have a particular soft spot for the Noserider model in the log department, with its smooth transition from tail to nose, critical engagement in the pocket and to cap it all off it tuns on a dime. Not to mention they look like a work of art!

Dare's 2 Cents... Well, first thing I'll say is god-damn they look amazing! These hand-shaped beauties are by far some of the most progressive shapes we've had in the shop. From their vintage logs like the Noosa 66, to my personal favourite mid-length the 'El Rayo Verde', McTavish has all conditions and skill levels covered. Having surfed shortboards my whole life it was a breath of fresh air hopping on a 7'2 El Rayo, with the speed and zip of a twinny and the paddle power of a midlength I was in love instantly. Featuring a V bottom on the tail for smooth rail transition and a single concave under the front foot to maintain that speed and drive. If you're looking for a gourmet board, look no further!

Gato Heroi

A.K.A Robin Kegel, shaper of some radical re-do's of past eras designed to be ridden with 240 volts of style. There's not much to expose about Gato... he's kept the mystery good and strong - however, we can say with confidence that this surfboards can do no wrong.

Models include:
FAT CAT
PLAYBOY
PLAYDATE
CALIFORNIAN
CHOP OP
SMOOTH OPERATOR
SPACEPIG
ANTI FISH
ROACH
SPACEROACH
ACID DROP
ACID SERIES
CREME

Georgia's 2 Cents... The unmatched aura that is the Gato log... Known for their dynamic capabilities and an inspired approach to stylistic and committed surfing, these models will have you channelling the early 60s and 70s pioneers of style, grace and breakthrough surfboard riding! My personal pick is the coveted FatCat model - fast, incredibly responsive in a tight section, with the ability to glide on water like a hot knife through butter.

Dare's 2 Cents... Having these boards in the shop over the last few years has been an absolute pleasure! A mix of sexy sprays and dynamic shapes, I'll very often catch myself pulling them out of the racks just to admire. The logs have a special place in my heart, coming from a shortboard background I admit the knifey rails and wicked contours of the "Playboy" have me wanting to join the longboard game.

Brown Microwave Television

The lovechild of Alex Knost and Jack Lynch. Tested and tweaked on the warm shores of Baja and now laying roots in Byron Bay, Australia where they're letting the shapes expand and grow naturally. The BMT model has got to be ridden to be believed, dynamic and fluid all in one buttery ball of resin and smooth glass, these two sure know how to shape boards that ride like no other!

Models include:
VIRUS PINTAIL
VIRUS PIN
NEEDLE BONZER
VIRUS SQUASH THUMTAIL
THUMBTAIL BONZER
DISCO
PERSONAL

Georgia's 2 Cents...
Hot damn! Anything crafted by the hands of a Knost/Lynch combination has got to be given a special place on our third storey and BMT has taken up residency quite nicely with us. As someone who is very passionate about traditional log models and the history of early shapes, especially those crafted for the simple act of surfing (i.e. no fancy bells and whistles just a board that rides and releases like no other), BMT's excite the hell outta me! A stripped back board that makes you work to experience a style of surfing everyone should feel at least once in their lifetime. I'm heavily interested in the 'Personal' and the 'Disco' models for their raw shapes and infinite capabilities when you give them the lovin' they deserve.

Dare's 2 Cents... When I hear the name's Alex Knost and Jack Lynch, my mind instantly thinks of style and innovation! The boards these two come up with are without a doubt the most unique shapes we've had in store over the years. I cant help but feel some sort of magic whenever I have a BMT under my arm, very excited to have one of my own someday!

Moonshine

Moonshine is one of our local heros. Based in Yallingup, WA and headed up by Jack Medland. With nothing but hand tools and the finest materials in the wild west, they design and make traditional crafts for the modern rider.

Models include:
DESERT RAVEN
LONG FISH
MIDLENGTH
STRINGERLESS

Georgia's 2 Cents... As a Moonshine rider I may be slightly bias ... however, these are my two cents! For ease of paddle and take off, smooth lines and responsive pivots, to critical holds in the pocket and the ability to tackle larger surf, a Moonshine log or Stringerless model will not disappoint. These babies are well worth the wait and look just as damn good as they surf!

Dare's 2 Cents... I mean the hype speaks for itself with these locally shaped beauties! Started up by some West Aus surfing pioneers they hit the ground running. Highly sought after and never a bad review... I'd keep my eyes on these guys, they know what they're doing!

John Pyzel

Jon Pyzel, a well known global shaper, and for good reason. If you're looking to up your performance game - this could be your answer. Pyzel began in surfing's mecca, Hawaii, before quickly advancing worldwide. With World #5 ranked John John Florence testing and giving feedback for the boards.. you can bet Pyzel surfboards are performance approved. In Australia, Pyzel boards are shaped on the Gold Coast ensuring every feature is tailored to our Aussie beaches.

Models include:
GHOST
SHADOW
VOYAGER 1
PYZALIEN 2
PHANTOM
HAPPY TWIN

Georgia's 2 Cents... When I think of your go-to shorty for a winter mission to the North-West, Pyzel is certainly up there with the best of them! Reliable in larger chunks of Indian Ocean, but fun and friendly enough in sub-par conditions, these will have you covered with foam and outlines you can trust! I love the 'Shadow' for it's high performance shape that won't restrict you when it comes to tight turns and getting the board up toward the 12 o'clock mark!

Dare's 2 Cents... Having John John as the main man for your brand must mean you're doing something right! I love the mix of performance and user friendly shapes these guys have come up with. The 'Ghost' in particular is my favourite shape, perfect all-rounder for basically anyone looking to shred without limits.

Christenson

Hailing from the sun-drenched, wave-rich Californian coastline, Chris Christenson is a legendary shaper strongly influenced by the historically rich culture of surfing and surfboard shaping, with an eye ever on the future of the industry and its seemingly limitless possibilities. With versatile shapes aplenty, Chris' work is steeped in the relationship between function and form which is evident in the details of all of his shapes.

Models include:
CAFE RACER
LANE SPLITTER
FISH
MYCONAUT
LONG PHISH
NAUTILUS
C-BUCKET
ULTRA TRACKER
CARRERA

Georgia's 2 Cents... There's not a lot that looks, feels and rides better than a Christenson, and for that reason I am consistently in awe of the shapes and tints that are being produced by this A-team. The C-Bucket takes the cake for me as a manoeuvrable mid-length that can jam a turn but won't compromise your flow - hell, the tints that I've seen on them are a work of art in themselves!

Dare's 2 Cents... I have a soft spot for Christenson boards, reason being, I haven't ridden a shape that I didn't like! The 'Fish' in particular has quickly become our best seller and its my go to in almost every condition (I may push its limits a bit but always having fun).

Channel Islands

Born in 1969 by Al and Terry Merrick, later joined by their next son Britt Merrick in 1990, Channel Islands has been a consistent force to be reckoned with within the surf industry when it comes to quality shapes. “The driving force behind Channel Islands Surfboards is the demand on design created by the world’s greatest surfers, allowing for the highest performance surfing possible. To provide the most dedicated surfers with the most advanced, performance designs is my passion” - Al Merrick, Designer/Shaper

Models include:
TWO HAPPY
ROCKET WIDE
NECK BEARD
FISH BEARD
OG FLYER
TWIN PIN
CI MID
CI FISH
HAPPY TRAVELER

Georgia's 2 Cents... The Channel Islands name holds a lot of weight in itself, and if you have Mikey February and Lakey Peterson as just two of your phenomenal team riders you're definitely doing many things right! I am absolutely taken by the fun and friendly board that is the CI Mid; as a result of a collaboration with the legendary Devon Howard of SoCal egg-riding prowess, how could it be wrong!? A fantastic all-rounder that will allow you to get in early and keep your trim speed, as well as give you the confidence to tackle sizey conditions and do so with ultimate turning power and ease!

Dare's 2 Cents... Channel Islands has accumulated over 50 years in the shaping scene, working together with some of the best surfers to ever exist, you know their shapes are a good as you get. Recently CI has been venturing into some alternative crafts with some really good feedback... The 'Twin Pin' in particular is a board of the year award winner and was made in collaboration with style master Mikey February. I can not stress enough the need to watch Sonic Souvenirs, a surf film dedicated to Mikey and his twin pin prowess!

Chilli

Shaper and founder of Chilli Surfboards Jimmy Cheal spent his youth transforming his passion for surfing into his passion for shaping and in 1997 'Chilli Surfboards' was born in a small factory in Brookvale, NSW. His shapes have captured the attention of both up-and-coming and well-renowned surfers around the world for many years, largely due to his solid vision for innovation in surfboard design and the shapes this has then created. In 2004, the dearly missed Andy Irons rode Chilli Surfboards in his successful campaign to claim a third world title.

Models include:
BV2
FADED2.0
SUGAR
RAREBIRD
RAREST BIRD
MIDDY
HOT KNIFE
VOLUME II
MID-STRENGTH
FADED
A2

Georgia's 2 Cents... The name says it all! If you're looking to spice up your surfing with anything from a fast and responsive driving board like the hot knife, to a fun and flirty twinny in the sugar, Chilli are all over it! The 'Mid-Strength' model ticks many boxes for me; the ability to shift your weight and get everything you want from an amazing mid-length, by having the ability to fly down the line and get that gooey zoomy feeling, as well as being able to rinse a turn as well as any other, this board has you handled!

Dare's 2 Cents... With surfers representing all over the world these guys have made a great name for themselves as one of the best at what they do! We've been lucky enough to have some shaped in WA so they have a bit of a homey feel, not to mention they have Jay Davies the Gorilla flaunting just how well they handle the power we get over here.

LOST

Mr Matt "Mayhem" Biolas was one of a group of school friends who in 1985 started up 'team lost'. The posse would spend their time between snowboarding at Mt. Baldy, skateboarding in Upland at the Pipeline and surfing Dana Point, and in 1987 Biolos started sanding boards straight out of high school ... and the rest is history! Matt has gone on to create a world-renowned, highly sought after name for LOST Surfboards by Mayhem, with the Australian branch operating out of the Gold Coast. All boards are hand shaped and finished and are consistently being tested and refined to suit more surfers and more conditions around the world!

Models include:
DRIVER 2.0
UBER DRIVER
SUB-DRIVER 2.0
PUDDLE JUMPER
CALI TWIN
RNF 96
RAD RIPPER
KA SWORDFISH

Georgia's 2 cents... You need only look at the LOST team riders and see that half the WCT women and men are on it, and that says a lot right there! Given that Matt has been shaping since '85, I know that these sleds have a rich history of refinement and testing behind them and I think this is one of the reasons why they're always in high demand! The Cali Twin in collaboration with MR gets me very excited thanks to its diversity in ability to both grovel and shred depending on the conditions you've been dealt; you can''t go wrong!

Dare's 2 cents... Watching Taj Burrow surf these when I was younger had me wanting to get my hands on one! With boards in all different shapes and sizes theres some magic for everyone to be found in a Lost! Also I reckon if you did a survey with the pros on their favourite shapers, these guys would sit in the top 3 for everyone.
